Geneious Basic

Geneious Basic limited its capabilities to three major software requirements among biological researchers. The first was the ability to import and export open file formats, making Geneious Basic a perfect file conversion tool. The second was its outstanding user interface for visualization of data sets. The third was its suitability as an introductory bioinformatics teaching tool.

We decided to rethink Geneious Basic's place in the Geneious ecosystem due to the increasing cost of developing, supporting, and commercially maintaining it. Its complete feature set paled in comparison to the excitement and breadth of its big brother, Geneious Pro. Even when it came to teaching, many course curricula covered sophisticated topics and therefore licensed Geneious Pro to do the heavy lifting.

The release of Geneious R6 brings with it the retirement of Geneious Basic. It's a comfortable retirement, with sunny beaches and glistening frozen drinks, to be sure. Geneious Basic rests easy, handing over the reins to the new era of a Geneious without limits.

Geneious Basic 5.6.6 may still be downloaded from here, and used as you may. However, we believe the elegance and functionality of Geneious R6 may be much more interesting to you. Check out the Geneious R6 page for more information on its merits, and give it a free try for 14 days.

And we should mention that even after the 14-day trial expires, Geneious R6 continues to have substantial file import/export functionality, the ability to view and organize all of your data, and a public API to make use of feature plugins developed by the community.
